“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
There are moments in life when everything seems to make sense. Doors are opening, prayers are being answered, and you can clearly see where God is leading. Then there are the other moments—the door hasn’t opened, the answer hasn’t come, and your circumstances don’t match what God has spoken to your heart. You know what the Bible says, but what you see around you seems to be saying something completely different. That’s where faith becomes more than something we talk about in church. That’s where we learn to truly live by faith.
Faith Doesn’t Ignore Reality—It Believes God Is Greater
Living by faith doesn’t mean pretending problems don’t exist. Faith isn’t denial. Abraham knew he was old. David knew Goliath was a giant. The disciples knew there wasn’t enough food to feed thousands of people. Jairus knew his daughter had died. Faith doesn’t deny the facts; faith simply refuses to give the facts the final word.
Romans 4 tells us that Abraham considered the circumstances surrounding him, yet remained convinced that God was able to do what He had promised. That’s what faith does. Faith can look directly at an impossible situation and still say, “But God.” Your circumstances may be real, but they are not greater than your God.
Stop Letting What You See Determine What You Believe
Second Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Most of us have been trained to live by sight. We look at the bank account before deciding whether God will provide. We look at the doctor’s report before deciding whether we can have hope. We look at our past before deciding whether God can use our future. But the Kingdom of God operates differently. Faith says, “I don’t have to see it yet to believe God is working.”
Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. If you already had everything you were believing for, you wouldn’t need faith. Sometimes the space between God’s promise and its manifestation is exactly where your faith grows strongest. Don’t allow what you see today to cancel what God has spoken over your tomorrow.
Faith Comes From God’s Word
Faith isn’t simply positive thinking or trying to convince yourself that everything is going to work out. Biblical faith has a foundation, and that foundation is the Word of God. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” If you want stronger faith, you have to feed your spirit with the Word.
Spend time in Scripture. Speak God’s promises over your life. Worship when you don’t feel like worshiping. Pray when you haven’t seen the answer yet. Surround yourself with people who will remind you what God has said instead of constantly reminding you what’s wrong. What you continually hear will eventually influence what you believe.
This is also why being connected to a strong, Bible-believing local church matters. We need people around us who will stir our faith, encourage us, pray with us, and remind us that nothing is impossible with God. There are battles you were never meant to fight alone.
Faith Takes a Step
Faith isn’t passive. Peter didn’t walk on water while sitting safely in the boat—he had to step out. Sometimes we’re asking God to move while God is waiting for us to take the step He’s already told us to take.
Maybe your step is applying for the position, starting the ministry, forgiving someone, making the phone call, giving generously, praying again, trying again, or simply showing up again. You may not see the entire road ahead of you, but you don’t need to see the whole road to take the next step. Faith obeys God with the information it has and trusts Him with what it doesn’t know.
Your Story Isn’t Finished
Maybe you’re reading this while you’re in a season where nothing seems to be moving. Don’t mistake God’s silence for God’s absence. Seeds grow underground before anything becomes visible above the surface. In the same way, God can be working in places you cannot see, arranging things you don’t know about, preparing people you haven’t met, and opening doors you don’t even know exist yet.
Keep believing. Keep praying. Keep standing on God’s Word. You aren’t called to live controlled by fear, circumstances, feelings, or what you can see with your natural eyes. You are called to live by faith.
